As a short introduction…
I have always been impressed by dioramas featuring models or toys and especially this special attention to detail. Sometimes a bit of sand glued on a base are enough to evoke an arid and rocky landscape. Some dioramas with led lights can give an effect of striking realism … But I said enough about my fascination for model making, since I don’t have enough time and talent to build these dioramas I naturally looked into the playsets of the brand JoyToy. So for my first review on Fulguropop I invite you to discover JoyToy’s Mecha Depot Maintainance Area.
JoyToy sells action figures of soldiers, mechs and “industrial base” type dioramas in 1/18 scale. I chose the playset Maitenance Area model especially because we can display a multitude of action figures on several levels and a more imposing figurine or vehicle in the middle of the set.
First impressions
The box is very compact and the weight is 1.3kg! In addition, three small accessories are delivered and they can be displayed randomly in the playset. All the elements of the kit to assemble are made in ABS, a rather light plastic. Each element is painted, the floor has a silver metal effect and the beams a rusty effect. This attention to detail of each element of the kit is truly impressive. I found the set quite expensive but now I find the price quite justified (around 60 € including shipping) .
Assembly
It will not take more than an hour to assemble the kit and the instructions are rather clear. One thing however, the number of beams compared to the photo on the box, there are actually less beams in reality. This does not compromise the solidity of the structure (fixed with tenons) but still… Imagine Lego showing more parts on the packaging and less in the bags, that would be a real scandal within their community of fans! Another negative point, the ladders tend to be quite curved and I could not put them back straight due to the type of plastic (ABS therefore not very flexible and brittle).
Playability
This is the highlight of this set! It is suitable for 1/18 Gi-Joe (vintage) type figures. But it was mainly for Kenner’s Aliens line that I chose this set. I took so much fun by posing the action figures on the different levels and on the roof of the main structure.
I have tested Figma Metal Gear figures but found them slightly too high. The Marvel Legends in 1/12 format are even a step higher. Finally I placed a Grendizer which fits perfectly in the middle of the main structure. Remove the 1/12 scale ladders if you want the display to look even bigger! (inserer photo 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 & 16)
Final thoughts
I really love this set and have already ordered another one (Mecha Depot Testing Area) because the advantage of this product range is that they can be combined. You are free to create your own diorama without necessarily following the instructions. I recommend this set to any toy collector in need of a diorama. It is very easy to find on Aliexpress, I received mine in less than a week.

Sympa et belle ménagerie xD
As-tu testé l’eau chaude (voir faire chauffer via micro-ondes avant l’ébullition et y plonger 3 ou 4s pas plus) ensuite tu poses à plat et tu passes un glaçon dans un chiffon dessus ?

Micro-onde, bouilloire, casserole … l’intérêt est d’avoir une eau très chaud proche de l’ébullition (mais je répète, 2/3s suffisent mieux vaut refaire “trempette” plusieurs fois).
C’est très rare que je doive aller “si fort”, la plupart du temps juste l’eau chaude coulant du robinet suffit (mais il faut laisser plus de temps genre 5/8s et refaire plusieurs fois au besoin).
Mieux vaut préférer cette méthode pour commencer et si vraiment passer à l’autre.
Y’a aussi la solution du sèche cheveux, chacun sa préférence.

TasmanT, je suis particulièrement touché par ta dédicace. Non seulement vis-à-vis de la licence Alien qui nous est chère mais également concernant la qualité de ton papier. Un exemplaire de cette structure finira chez moi, sois en certain, car j’ai une petite idée en tête que je partagerai très certainement dans les colonnes du magazine.
Je souhaite également souligner la qualité des photos mettant en scène les jouets Aliens de chez Kenner. Le rendu est remarquable sur le plan de la chromatique comme de la dynamique. J’aimerais avoir ne serait-ce qu’un dixième de ton talent dans le domaine de la photographie.
Pourtant je ne ne suis pas un adepte de la gamme Aliens par Kenner, essentiellement parce que je ne l’ai pas connu durant ma jeunesse mais aussi parce que je trouve certaines déclinaisons des xénomorphes trop folkloriques. C’est un avis personnel bien entendu et j’apprécie tout de même certains modèles.
Qu’importe, la manière dont tu as rédigé ce papier et les photographies qui y sont associées m’ont fait passer un très agréable moment. Je te renouvelle mes remerciements TasmanT et j’insiste sur le fait que suis sincèrement touché. J’espère de tout cœur que tu participeras encore au magazine 🙂

Merci beaucoup Nicko. Oui j’espère participer à d’autres review très bientôt! Je suis en effet très attaché à l’univers Aliens de chez Kenner car étant enfant j’avais Drake et le Mantis Alien. J’étais fasciné par ces couleurs vives mais j’étais trop petit pour voir le film… C’est seulement par la suite que j’ai pu découvrir tout l’univers fascinant créé par Ridley Scott et façonné par Moebius et Giger.

Une dernière remarque TasmanT. Je trouve que la nature même de la structure, les portes en fond avec leurs croisements métalliques et les marquages signalétiques jaune/noir renvoient inéluctablement au second opus de la saga Alien. Précisément dans les infrastructures de LV-426 où les marines coloniaux pénètrent. Il y a réellement dans le design de ce Mecha Depot un A.D.N de la ruche dans Aliens, le retour. D’où l’absolue pertinence de ton association entre la structure et les jouets Aliens de Kenner. Bravo encore.
P.S : Je dirais, à titre personnel, que l’on doit plutôt la création de l’univers d’Alien à O’Bannon et Shusett. Ridley Scott a plutôt brillé par ses talents de réalisateur et de metteur en scène dans le premier opus. Cela se vérifiera moins par la suite malheureusement.
