Interview – Harry Moore : Serial Designer

Today we share a few words with an incredible design artist whose work we discussed recently with Jerry Wilson.

Can you introduce us to your work as an illustrator and a designer ?

My work can be found on my website (harrymooredesign.com) and instagram (https://www.instagram.com/harrymooredesign)

You have a lot of experience in the toy packaging field. Was it your goal when you were younger ?

I don’t think it was a goal, but I saved all of the boxes and cards backs from toys I got as a kid. Cut out a lot of GI Joe bio cards, and flattened cereal boxes to save. Looking back I guess I should not be surprised.

Can you name a few projects you worked on ?

For about 10 years I worked on the team that designed all of the toy and candy packaging for Disney Theme Parks, after working at Disney I had the opportunity to work on several toy and game packages for multiple clients. Some personal highlights include the Superman Man of Steel Quick-Shots, helping out with G.I. Joe Combat Heroes and Marvel Super Hero Squad as well as working on Netlfix Stretch Armstrong items. A recent project that I really liked was a Candyland game for Hershey.

Which were your favorites ?

My all time favorite might be a SpongeBob SquarePants balloon that ran for several years at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in the United States. Recently my favorite would be the Vintage Spider-Man Marvel legends packaging.

You did an amazing job you did on the latest retro Spider-Man toys for Hasbro. Can you explain us how you worked on these ?

The Spider-Man line was challenging. I wanted to re-create the “vintage” look as close as possible, while updating a few things to reflect the updated product. I might be wrong, but I assumed much of the original art was done traditionally, slightly before toy work went digital. So I experimented with a few techniques, to capture a hand-crafted look that would have likely been used to create the originals.

Are you a fan of pop culture ?

I have to keep up on pop culture, as I never know what I might be working on next. But personally I enjoy old comics and the original Universal Monsters and Planet of the Apes Movies.

What are your main sources of inspiration ?

I keep my eye on other toy and cereal box designs.

Is there an IP you’d particularly like to work on ?

A classic Planet of the Apes or Universal Monsters board game would be fun.

Thank you for your time Harry and thank you for creating these awesome designs !

Intéressant, c’est rare ce genre d’interview concernant des personnes de l’ombre, travaillant sur l’environnement du jouet.
